Skiing on the Arlberg from Stuben

Over Valfagehr to St. Christoph and St. Anton

In the other direction the Valfagehrbahn, a six-seat chairlift, leaves from Alpe Rauz. At the top you are in the terrain around the Ulmer Hütte, and you ski over the Galzig to St. Christoph or down to St. Anton. From St. Christoph the St. Christophbahn takes you straight back up to the Galzig, with no detour through St. Anton.

The Vallugabahn starts on the Galzig. Anyone can ride up to the viewing platform at 2,811 metres. With skis, you only get into the Vallugabahn II with a ski or mountain guide. The Arlberg-Kandahar race course lies on the Gampen; Hannes Schneider started the race with Arnold Lunn in 1928. Schneider was born in Stuben in 1890.

In the afternoon you ride the St. Christophbahn and the Arlenmähderbahn, then follow the easy Valfagehr and Rauztobel runs all the way to Stuben. According to the Arlberger Bergbahnen operating hours, the Arlenmähderbahn runs until 16:10 and the Valfagehrbahn until 16:20.

Warth-Schröcken and the Run of Fame

Since the 2013/14 winter the Auenfeldjet has linked Lech with Warth-Schröcken, a ride of just over eight minutes. On the other side are 15 lifts and 62.1 kilometres of pistes between roughly 1,300 and 2,050 metres. The lifts there run from 9:00 to 16:15.

Give Warth a full day, and go on skis. The road from Lech to Warth is closed in winter, and by car the detour via Bludenz and the Bregenzerwald is more than 90 kilometres.

If you want it all in one day, ski the Run of Fame: 85 kilometres and 18,000 metres of altitude from St. Anton to Warth and back, over the Arlberg pass, the Flexen pass and the Hochtannberg. Stuben is on the route.

A ski holiday on the Arlberg: why Stuben over St. Anton

St. Anton is known for its après-ski. The Mooserwirt and the Krazy Kanguruh sit above the town on the run down. If you want to party there into the evening, stay in St. Anton.

If you come for the pistes, stay in Stuben. The Flexenbahn and the Valfagehrbahn both start at Alpe Rauz, one run from the village. Zürs and Lech on one side, St. Christoph and St. Anton on the other: you reach both on skis every morning without a detour. In the evening you walk from dinner to your room, and the village is quiet.

Freeride, ski touring and heli-skiing from Stuben

Above the Albona is the Albonagrat ridge, 1,001 metres above the village. Ski Arlberg counts more than 200 kilometres of off-piste descents across the area and names the top stations of the Madlochbahn, Muggengratbahn and Trittkopfbahn as starting points for popular freeride tours. For ski touring the Arlberg has more than 70 routes, and March and April are the best months. Heli-skiing is allowed in Austria only on the Arlberg. Wucher Helicopter flies from Zürs to the Mehlsack for 580 euros or to the Schneetäli for 600 euros, each per helicopter with up to three guests. A mountain guide is mandatory and paid separately.

Ski pass, ski rental and ski school

The easiest way to get your Ski Arlberg pass is online before you arrive; we send you the link. You can also buy it at reception or at the Albona ticket office. Prices follow the official Ski Arlberg list, and multi-day passes are valid on consecutive days.

On busy days Ski Arlberg caps the number of skiers in Lech, Oberlech and Zürs. Day tickets bought in Stuben are then valid only in part. If you need to be sure of Zürs on a particular day, ask when you buy.

Skis and snowboards are for hire at Skibase Stuben, across the road from the Ski Hotel. You can also send your own skis ahead, and we put them in your room on arrival day. The Schischule Stuben, run by Willi Mathies, gives group and private lessons, and we book the private ski and mountain guide Tom Schnabl for freeride and touring days. Snow and the 2026/27 season

Ski Arlberg plans the season from 2 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, with partial operation possible at either end. The Ski Hotel and the Arlberg Motel are open from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, the Chalet all year.

Ski Arlberg calls Zürs the snowiest winter sports resort in Austria, measured by the sum of daily fresh snowfall. On the Albona the north-facing slopes hold their snow into late spring. Which lifts are running today and how much fresh snow has fallen is on lifts and slopes live.

Four ski days from Stuben

Day one is for the Tyrolean side. Valfagehr, the Galzig, lunch on the Gampen, and by 16:00 at the latest you are back at the Arlenmähderbahn.

On day two, take the 8:30 gondola, then the Flexenbahn to Zürs and the White Ring. By the afternoon you are back at the Trittkopfbahn I.

Day three is the long one: through Lech and over the Auenfeldjet to Warth-Schröcken. Ask in the morning when the last Auenfeldjet and Flexenbahn run, and work backwards from there.

Keep day four open. If it snowed overnight, book a guide for the Albonagrat. On Thursdays Zürs runs an Early Start into the Zürser Täli, at 7:45 at the Seekopfbahn valley station. The Albona gondola is not running that early, so our shuttle takes you to Zürs for 28 euros per trip, for up to seven people.

Evenings in Stuben

You ski all the way into the village. From 15:00 to 18:30 the Ski Hotel's three saunas and two Kneipp pools are open, and the bar opens at 16:00. On half board you eat the Chef's Choice in the Panorama restaurant or the Zirbenstube; the Alte Gaststube cooks à la carte from 18:00 to 21:00. The Chef's Table seats eight guests at most, and Falstaff gave it 95 points in 2026. Times and tables are on restaurants and bar.
