Ski holiday in St. Anton am Arlberg, based in Stuben

A ski holiday in St. Anton am Arlberg does not have to start in the resort itself. From Stuben, the small village on the Vorarlberg side of the Arlberg pass, you reach the Galzig, Valluga and Gampen on skis, on the same Ski Arlberg pass. Here you can read how the route via the Albona and Valfagehr works, which mountains make up St. Anton, how to get over by car, bus and train, and when an evening in St. Anton is worth it. We write this from Stuben, where the Mondschein has stood since 1739.

St. Anton am Arlberg: the Tyrolean part of Ski Arlberg

St. Anton lies at 1,304 metres at the head of the Stanzertal in Tyrol. Together with St. Christoph and Stuben it forms one sector of the Ski Arlberg area, which also includes Lech, Zürs and Warth-Schröcken. One ski pass covers all of these villages, wherever you stay. The Paznaun with Ischgl is not part of it; it is a separate ski area in a side valley towards Landeck.

For winter 2026/27 Ski Arlberg plans the season in St. Anton, St. Christoph and Stuben from 2 December 2026 to 18 April 2027. Operations may be limited at the start and end of the season.

For your ski day, what matters most is which lifts are running today and whether the link between the villages is open.

Galzig and Valluga

The Galzigbahn takes you straight from St. Anton up to the Galzig, around 2,086 metres. This is where the Kandahar run is, number 52 on the piste map. The Vallugabahn I takes you on towards the Valluga.

The last stretch is covered by the Vallugabahn II, a small cable car for five people. Skis and snowboards may only go up with a ski or mountain guide. Without a guide you visit the viewing platform at 2,811 metres and ride back down. Ski Arlberg itself names a guided deep-snow descent from the Valluga as one of the Arlberg's experiences.

Gampen, Kapall and Nasserein

Above the village are the Gampen and Kapall, served by the Gampenbahn and Kapallbahn. This is the course of the Arlberg-Kandahar races, with runs 42, 31, 32 (the Eisfall ski route) and 34. At lunchtime you can sit on the terrace of the Gampen restaurant.

From the Gampen a toboggan run leads down to Nasserein, the part of the village with its own gondola. For an evening without skis there are toboggan nights on the Gampen.

Rendl

On the other side of the valley is the Rendl, reached on the Rendlbahn, an eight-person gondola. The Run of Fame also starts from St. Anton and the Rendl: 85 kilometres and 18,000 vertical metres via Stuben, Zürs, Lech and Schröcken to Warth and back, over the Arlberg, Flexen and Hochtannberg passes. The northern route is signed in purple, the southern route in orange.

Skiing from Stuben to St. Anton

The ski day starts in Stuben at the Albona I lift. Since winter 2023/24 the eight-person gondola has run from 1,405 to 1,845 metres. From the Ski Hotel Mondschein it is a few minutes' walk to the valley station, and the Motel is right next to it.

From the Albona a piste leads down to Alpe Rauz on the pass road. There the Valfagehrbahn starts, a six-seater chairlift. It has linked the Albona with the St. Anton ski area since 1980; the current lift dates from 2005.

At the top you are in the terrain around the Ulmer Hütte, in the St. Anton and St. Christoph ski area. From there you ski down via the runs towards the Galzig to St. Anton. Between the two villages lies St. Christoph at 1,793 metres, the village right on the Arlberg pass.

For the way back, ski to Alpe Rauz again. There the Albonabahn II, a gondola since December 2016, takes you up to the Albona saddle, and from there you ski down to Stuben. From the Albona ridge to the village is around 1,000 vertical metres. At the Longboard Classic, held in Stuben since 1999, more than 400 participants ski this descent.

How to plan the day

  • Start early: the way to St. Anton involves several lifts. Allow time for the way there and back.
  • Sort out the way back first: check how late the lifts for the return run, above all the Albonabahn II at Alpe Rauz. If you miss it, you need a taxi or the bus.
  • Check the lift status in the morning: which lifts are open is shown on our page lifts and slopes live.
  • Valluga only with a guide: if you want to ski down from the Valluga, book a ski or mountain guide in advance.
  • Lunch on the Gampen or the Galzig, then head back towards Alpe Rauz in good time.

Getting to St. Anton by car, bus, taxi or train

Without skis it is around twelve kilometres from Stuben to St. Anton station. The road goes over the Arlberg pass and past St. Christoph. The Stuben tourist office reckons on about 25 minutes by taxi.

The bus connection with a change in Zürs takes longer than the map suggests. For an evening in St. Anton a taxi is usually the simpler choice. Sort out your return before you go.

By car

With your own car you have two options. The pass road goes over the Arlberg and through St. Christoph. The S16 Arlberg tunnel between Langen and St. Anton is just under 14 kilometres long and has its own toll; the vignette does not cover it.

In Austria, winter tyres are compulsory in wintry conditions from 1 November to 15 April. In snow, slush or ice you need winter tyres on all wheels, marked M+S and with at least 4 mm of tread. Snow chains on two drive wheels are only allowed if the road is fully or almost fully covered with snow or ice.

By train

St. Anton has its own station on the Arlberg railway between Innsbruck and Bludenz. Railjets stop there with direct connections from Vienna and Zurich. The current station was built when the railway line was moved before the 2001 Ski World Championships.

For a stay in Stuben, Langen am Arlberg station is closer. Railjets stop there too. The Mondschein shuttle collects you if you book in advance. All the options are under getting to Stuben.

Après-ski in St. Anton, the evening in Stuben

St. Anton is known for its après-ski. The two best-known addresses are the Mooserwirt and the Krazy Kanguruh, both above the village on the ski run. You reach the Krazy Kanguruh via run 29/50.

If you stay there into the evening, you can no longer ski back to Stuben, because the connecting lifts close in the afternoon. Then order a taxi or take the bus.

You can also take the last lift back and spend the evening in Stuben. The bar at the Ski Hotel Mondschein opens at 4 pm and stays open until midnight, on Fridays until 2.30 am for Electronic Friday. The Alte Gaststube cooks à la carte in the evening from 6 pm to 9 pm.

For a special evening there is the Chef's Table: no more than eight guests, an aperitif at 7 pm in the wine cellar, the menu from 7.30 pm, on Mondays and from Friday to Sunday. Falstaff rated it with 95 points in 2026. Times and reservations are under restaurants and Chef's Table.

Ski history between St. Anton and Stuben

On 3 January 1901, ski pioneers founded the Ski Club Arlberg in the hospice at St. Christoph. The signatories included Carl and Adolf Schuler and Oswald Trojer. Today the club has more than 9,000 members from 61 nations and held its 126th general assembly in St. Christoph in September 2026.

Hannes Schneider was born in Stuben on 24 June 1890. In 1907 he was brought to St. Anton as a ski instructor. There he developed the Arlberg technique further and founded his ski school after the First World War. In 1928, with the Briton Arnold Lunn, he launched the Arlberg-Kandahar race, whose course today is on the Gampen.

His brother Friedrich founded the ski school in Stuben in 1924. Emil Walch, later landlord of what was then the Gasthaus zum Mondschein, was the driving force behind the Albona lift and its first managing director. In Stuben a bronze statue has commemorated Hannes Schneider since December 2012, and another statue stands in the Alte Gaststube. The promenade on which the hotel stands bears his name.

In 2001 St. Anton hosted the Alpine Ski World Championships. The railway line was moved and the new station built for them. At the end of the season, hundreds race from the Valluga ridge to the valley in a mass start at Der Weisse Rausch; in 2026 there were 555 starters over 1,346 vertical metres. For 2027 the Tyrol events calendar gives 17 April.

Ski holiday in St. Anton am Arlberg: stay in the resort or in Stuben?

Both villages share the same ski area. The question is where you want to be in the evening.

St. Anton suits you if you want lots of restaurants and bars, après-ski within walking distance and a station in the village. It is the bigger resort, with districts such as Nasserein and several valley stations.

Stuben suits you if you are looking for short distances and quiet evenings. The village lies at around 1,400 metres, the Albona I lift runs right from the village, and you can still ski to St. Anton every day. Read more about the village on our page about Stuben am Arlberg.

The Ski Hotel Mondschein has stood at Hannes Schneider Promenade 9 since 1739, with the Alte Gaststube, bar and wine cellar in the house. The Arlberg Motel at Stuben 53 is a bed and breakfast right next to the valley station of the Albona I lift, with breakfast and a ski room.

Both houses are open in winter, from December to mid-April. Check-in is from 3 pm, check-out by 11 am. If you want to go to Lech on another day, take the Flexenbahn to Zürs from Alpe Rauz.
