Chalet suites with a sauna of their own
Private spa suite on the Arlberg
A private spa suite on the Arlberg, the way we mean it: the sauna is inside your suite and nobody else uses it. Nine of the 15 rooms at the Mondschein Chalet in Stuben have a spa of their own, and two suites add an outdoor hot tub.

What a private spa suite means at the Chalet
Picture an anniversary weekend. You fly into Zurich, take the train to Langen am Arlberg and are in Stuben five minutes later. By late afternoon you ski back to the Chalet door, leave your skis in the ski room and walk into your suite. The sauna is heating while you make a coffee at the drinks bar.
No booking slot. No robe in a shared corridor. Nobody else on the bench.
The Mondschein Chalet sits on the slope above Stuben, a village on the Arlberg in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg. Of its 15 rooms, nine have their own spa: seven a sauna, two an infrared cabin. Every room faces south-west, where the sun goes down in the evening.
There is no large shared spa at the Chalet, and we think that is the right call. After a day on the mountain, a sauna you share with no one beats a bigger one you share with strangers. If you like company in the heat, the Ski Hotel's sauna area is a few minutes down the slope.

Four suite types with a sauna or infrared cabin
For two, with a sauna and no separate living room: the Panorama Spa Double. 40 m² with a panoramic sauna, an open fireplace and a balcony. The Swiss pine bed by "die Køje" faces the window, so the mountains are the first thing you see. Your ski boots dry on a warmer of their own. There are four of these rooms, two on the ground floor with their own entrance from the car park.
For a couple on a ski trip, this is the room we recommend, even when a bigger suite is free. You already have the sauna, the fire and the view. More space only adds a living room.
If you would rather spend the evening on a sofa than in bed, book the Signature Spa Suite. 50 m², a separate bedroom, a living room with a dining area and loden bench, a private sauna, an open fireplace and a boot warmer. A sofa bed takes a third guest. There are two: the Signature Spa Suite Hot Tub, with its own outdoor hot tub, and one without.
The Panorama Spa Suite is also 50 m² with two rooms, both opening onto the balcony. It has an infrared cabin instead of a sauna, and no boot warmer of its own.
Four of you? The Grand Alpine Suite has 55 m², a bedroom with a double bed, a sofa bed for two in the living room, a private sauna and a hot tub on the terrace.
Sauna or infrared
A sauna gives dry, strong heat, which is what most skiers want after a cold day on the Albona. Seven rooms have one.
An infrared cabin warms your body directly, without hot air. If sauna heat is too much for you, or you want to sit in it with a book, the Panorama Spa Suite suits you better than a sauna suite.
Private spa suite with an outdoor hot tub
Two suites have a hot tub outside. In the Signature Spa Suite Hot Tub you step out after your first sauna round and look across the valley to the Swiss mountains. In the Grand Alpine Suite the hot tub is on the terrace, right outside the living room.
Celebrating? On request we turn the hot tub into a rose bath, with champagne. We also bring a bottle from the Ski Hotel's wine cellar up to your suite. Tell us before you arrive.

An evening in a spa suite
After the last run you ski back to the door. Boots go in the boot room on the ground floor or on the warmer in your suite, and the sauna runs for as long as you like.
For dinner you walk a few minutes down to the Ski Hotel. With half board, depending on the package you book, you arrive between 6.30 and 8.30 pm for the Chef's Choice in the panorama restaurant or the Zirbenstube. Then you climb back up and switch the sauna on a second time. That is the part of the evening a shared spa cannot give you: the Ski Hotel's saunas close at 6.30 pm.
The evening before, you order breakfast for a set time between 7.30 and 10 am. It arrives at your suite, vegetarian or with meat, with freshly cooked eggs. Coffee and tea from the drinks bar are included.
A private spa in Austria, in summer too
The Chalet is open all year. The Ski Hotel and the Arlberg Motel close after the winter; the Chalet does not. In summer the hiking trails start at the front door, and your own sauna is waiting when you get back.
A mountain guide takes families with children aged 6 and over, and a guided e-bike tour around Lech and Zürs is open to children aged 10 and over. Everything about the house itself is on the Mondschein Chalet page.
Good to know before you book
Every bathroom at the Chalet has a walk-in shower; there are no bathtubs. There is no guest lift in the building either. The restaurants, bar and wine cellar are in the Ski Hotel.
The Ski Hotel's sauna area, with three saunas and two Kneipp basins, is described on our wellness on the Arlberg page. How you get from the Chalet to the slopes and back is on ski-in ski-out on the Arlberg.
Questions about the private spa suites
Is the sauna really just for us?
Yes. The sauna or infrared cabin is inside your suite and nobody else uses it. You need no booking slot, and you can heat it up again after dinner.
Which suites have a hot tub?
Two. The Signature Spa Suite Hot Tub has its own outdoor hot tub with a view across the valley to Switzerland. The Grand Alpine Suite has one on its terrace. Both also have a private sauna.
Is the hot tub included in the price?
Yes. The hot tub belongs to the suite and is included in the price of the Signature Spa Suite Hot Tub and the Grand Alpine Suite, just like the sauna. A rose bath with champagne can be added on request.
What is the difference between a sauna and an infrared cabin?
A sauna heats the air; an infrared cabin warms your body directly, without hot air. Seven rooms at the Chalet have a sauna, the two Panorama Spa Suites have an infrared cabin.
Can three or four of us stay in a spa suite?
Yes. The Signature Spa Suite and the Panorama Spa Suite have a sofa bed for a third guest. Four of you stay in the Grand Alpine Suite, with a double bed in the bedroom and a sofa bed for two in the living room.
Which suite do you recommend for a couple?
For a ski trip for two, the Panorama Spa Double: 40 m² with a panoramic sauna, fireplace, balcony and its own boot warmer. If you like to spend afternoons in your room, take the Signature Spa Suite with its living room.
How does breakfast in the suite work?
You order the evening before and choose a time between 7.30 and 10 am. Breakfast comes to your suite, vegetarian or with meat. Coffee and tea from the drinks bar are included.
Is there a bathtub at the Chalet?
No. All rooms and suites have a walk-in shower, and the larger suites a separate toilet. If a bath matters to you, the Comfort Double and Panorama Double at the Ski Hotel have one.
Is the Chalet open in summer?
Yes, all year. In summer it is the only one of the three Mondschein houses with a spa, because the Ski Hotel and the Arlberg Motel open in winter only.
How far is it from the Chalet to the slopes?
One to two minutes to the Chalet lift. It takes you to the piste and on to the Albona I lift. At the end of the day you ski back to the door.
