Arlberg ski holiday from Munich: two routes by car
Two routes lead from Munich to Stuben. The shorter one goes via Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Fern pass and Imst towards St. Anton. The longer one follows the A96 to Lindau and from there through Vorarlberg. Without traffic, the two are only a few minutes apart according to the route planner.
Via the Fern pass: shorter, busier at weekends
You take the A95 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then via Ehrwald and the B179 Fern pass road to Nassereith and Imst. From Imst you follow the A12 and S16 to St. Anton am Arlberg. From there the pass road takes you via St. Christoph and over the Arlberg pass at 1,793 metres straight to Stuben.
If the pass road is closed, take the toll Arlberg road tunnel and drive back up from Langen to Stuben. On busy travel weekends, Tyrol closes alternative routes on minor roads in the Reutte district to through traffic. In summer 2026, for example, this applied on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 7 am to 7 pm. The B179 Fern pass road itself is not affected, so stay on the main road. You can find the current dates before you set off from the ADAC or the state of Tyrol.
Via Lindau: a little longer, but no tunnel toll
The A96 takes you via Memmingen to Lindau. Across the border you drive through the Pfänder tunnel onto the A14, past Dornbirn, Feldkirch and Bludenz, and then onto the S16 into the Klostertal. At Klösterle you leave the S16 before the Arlberg tunnel, heading for the Arlberg pass. The last few kilometres climb on the main road up to Stuben.
Because you do not go through the tunnel, you pay no Arlberg toll on this route. The exact exits and our house addresses for the sat nav are on the page getting to Stuben.
| Start | Route | Distance | Driving time without traffic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Munich main station | A95, Fern pass, Imst, S16, Arlberg pass | approx. 200 km | approx. 2 h 50 min |
| Munich main station | A96, Lindau, A14, S16 | approx. 265 km | approx. 2 h 55 min |
| Munich Airport | A92, A99, A96, Lindau, A14, S16 | approx. 300 km | approx. 3 h 10 min |
| Stuttgart main station | A8, A7, A96, Lindau, A14, S16 | approx. 300 km | approx. 3 h 15 min |
The figures come from a route planner based on OpenStreetMap and apply to clear roads. On winter changeover Saturdays and in snowfall, allow considerably more time.
Vignette, tunnel toll and winter tyres
On Austria's motorways and expressways you need a vignette. Four points will save you trouble at the border.
- The A14 is vignette-free from the border at Hörbranz to Hohenems, including the Pfänder tunnel. From there to the Arlberg a vignette is required.
- The 2026 sticker vignette is the last one. From February 2027 there will only be the digital vignette, linked to your number plate.
- Digital two-month and annual vignettes bought online by private customers are only valid from the 18th day. The one-day and ten-day vignettes are valid immediately.
- The Arlberg road tunnel between St. Anton and Langen costs extra: €13 for a single trip by car, as of 2026.
From 1 November to 15 April, winter equipment is compulsory in Austria in snow, slush or ice. Then you need winter tyres on all wheels, and on a closed snow cover chains on two drive wheels are also allowed. When you book a hire car, ask specifically for winter tyres.
Which lifts are open and how much snow there is in Stuben can be checked before you set off on Arlberg live.
By train from Munich to Langen am Arlberg
The nearest station is Langen am Arlberg, on the Arlberg railway between Innsbruck and Bludenz, three kilometres from Stuben. There is no direct train from Munich. The usual way is to change in Innsbruck.
From Munich main station, Railjets run directly to Innsbruck roughly every two hours during the day, taking around two hours. In Innsbruck you change to a long-distance train towards Bludenz and Bregenz. Not all of them stop in Langen, so check the timetable. Allow about an hour and 15 minutes for this section.
| Section | Connection | Time or distance |
|---|---|---|
| Munich Airport to main station | S-Bahn S1 or S8 | approx. 40 min |
| Munich main station to Innsbruck main station | Railjet, roughly every two hours | approx. 2 h |
| Innsbruck main station to Langen am Arlberg | EuroCity or another long-distance train stopping in Langen | approx. 1 h 15 min |
| Langen to Stuben | bus 750, taxi or Mondschein shuttle | 3 km |
From Langen, regional bus 750 runs several times a day via Stuben to Zürs and Lech. More comfortable is our own shuttle, which collects you from the station. It runs on request, so just tell us your train.
The ÖBB and Deutsche Bahn journey planners show which connection suits your travel day. By train you save yourself the vignette, the tunnel toll and the pass road in driving snow.
From Munich Airport: transfer, hire car, Arlberg Express
If you land in Munich, take the S-Bahn to the main station in around 40 minutes and catch the train there. Alternatively, pick up a hire car and drive via the A96 and Lindau.
The Arlberg Express from Klösterle runs a scheduled shuttle from Zurich Airport that also stops at the post bus stop in Stuben. This shuttle does not run from Munich, but for Munich Airport the company offers private taxi transfers. If you are flying anyway, it is worth comparing with getting here via Zurich.
On request we arrange a private transfer by van, SUV or saloon. Give us your flight details and we will track your landing and arrange a late check-in to match. For guests in a hurry, a helicopter flight from Munich to the Zürs heliport is also possible, and our driver collects you there.
A ski weekend from southern Germany
Ski Arlberg plans winter 2026/27 from 2 December 2026 to 18 April 2027. Operations may be limited at the start and end, and both dates depend on snow and weather. From Stuben you ride the Albona lift up the Albona. Via the Flexenbahn, the link between Stuben/Rauz and Zürs since 2016, you reach Zürs and Lech on skis.
Arrive on Friday
Your room is ready from 3 pm. On Fridays the bar at the Ski Hotel is open until 2.30 am, with a DJ for Electronic Friday. If you arrive later, eat à la carte in the Alte Gaststube until 9 pm, or fondue in the Bilderzimmer from 6 pm.
Saturday on the slopes, the Chef's Table in the evening
For us, ski-in, ski-out means you click into your skis outside the door. In the evening the Chef's Table welcomes no more than eight guests from Friday to Sunday and on Mondays, with an aperitif at 7 pm in the wine cellar. Falstaff gave it 95 points in its 2026 guide. More on the page about our restaurants and the Chef's Table.
Back on Sunday
Check-out is by 11 am, which leaves the afternoon for a few last runs. Check the traffic in Tyrol before you drive home. If there is a jam at the Fern pass, the route via Lindau is the alternative.
Which house suits your journey
Stuben belongs to the municipality of Klösterle in the Klostertal and is the birthplace of Hannes Schneider, founder of the first ski school on the Arlberg. All three Mondschein houses are in Stuben.
- The Ski Hotel Mondschein, an inn since 1739, at Hannes Schneider Promenade 9 has free outdoor parking nearby and spaces in the underground garage. Handy if you are coming from Munich with a full boot.
- At the Mondschein Chalet with private spa suites at Stuben 55, each suite has a sauna, infrared cabin or hot tub depending on the category, and some have an open fireplace. Parking is right by the house. The Chalet is the only one of our houses open all year.
- The Arlberg Motel, a good-value ski base, at Stuben 53 is a bed and breakfast right next to the valley station of the Albona I lift. You park at the entrance to the village, and a garage space costs €18 per day. After digital check-in you collect your key at the Ski Hotel, around 100 metres away.
The Ski Hotel and the Motel are closed in summer. If you come from Munich to hike in summer, you stay at the Chalet.
