Mondschein's Story
A house with tradition and history
The story of today’s Hotel Mondschein dates back to 1520, when the original structure was devastated by a catastrophic fire in the village of Stuben. Remarkably, it was rebuilt just five years later, in 1525. The building first appeared in historical records in 1739 as the "Gasthaus zum Mondschein," marking the beginning of its rich legacy.
In 1895, Gebhard Walch acquired the 'Mondschein,' establishing a cherished family tradition. His successor, Emil Walch, not only continued the inn's legacy but also played a pivotal role as a co-founder of the groundbreaking Albona Railway. From 1967 to 2005, Werner Walch managed the hotel, after which it was sold to Markus Kegele, who has been the proud host ever since.
Hotel Mondschein boasts a rich tradition as a premier ski hotel. Willi Walch proudly brought home the first medals from the World Ski Championships, competing in Chamonix and Zakopane. Over the years, the hotel has welcomed and earned the admiration of numerous ski pioneers and legends, including local hero Hannes Schneider, Luis Trenker, and snowboard icons Terry Kidwell, Chuck Barfoot, Shawn Farmer, and Mike Jacoby. They all cherished the warmth of the Mondschein, along with its exceptional cuisine and well-stocked wine cellar.
Life in the high mountains was marked by deprivation and poverty until the dawn of the tourism era. It wasn't until around 1880, with the emergence of the mountains as a promising 'summer resort,' that significant changes began to take place. However, the real boom came with the rise of skiing, which rapidly evolved into a beloved sport.
The overall development of the Arlberg illustrates that we are on the right path. Today, it stands as one of the most renowned and sought-after ski destinations in the world. The skiing techniques pioneered by Hannes Schneider continue to be embraced and cherished by skiers globally.
Immerse yourself in the history, tradition, and modern comfort of Hotel Mondschein—your ideal home in the mountains, whether in winter or summer.
Testimonial K2
In 2005, K2 paved the way for rocker technology with the Shane McConkey-inspired Pontoon. In the years that followed, the company continued to refine the various rocker types and today every ski in the K2 collection has one of five rocker types that are grouped together under the umbrella term Baseline® technology. Every year, the K2 development team travels across the ski areas to test new prototypes and designs. Not only the snow conditions and slopes are important, but also the physical well-being and the opportunity to discuss the results on the mountain in detail in an appropriate atmosphere after a strenuous day, even if it goes on until late in the evening. The Hotel Mondschein was and is an important part of K2 development, as one or two groundbreaking ideas have been developed in Stuben, which is not only due to the great slope conditions, but also to the excellent service and the extremely friendly atmosphere of Markus Kegele and his team.
